About the RNZIH Education Trust

Aim

The aim of the Trust is to assist and promote, in any way possible, horticultural training and education in New Zealand, including promoting and providing scholarships and prize schemes for young people in horticulture.

Vision of the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition

  1. To identify and develop the next generation of leaders in the Horticultural industry.
  2. To foster and encourage the development of leadership capability in these people to meet challenges of the future.
  3. To foster an understanding of world class marketing, global supply chains, new products, new technologies and business models, through activities within the competition.
  4. To encourage contestants to seize opportunities and new challenges and use them as part of the learning and self-development process.
  5. To nurture world leading best practice through the prizes and awards offered in the competition.
  6. To raise awareness of the role of horticulture in the New Zealand economy, as well as potential career paths in horticulture industry.

Aims for the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition

  1. To offer a national competition that is well regarded and valued by all stakeholders, including competitors, sponsors, and the industry generally.
  2. To have representation from the various sectors within horticulture at the Grand Final, up to a maximum of 8 sectors in any one competition
  3. To have all sector winners entering the Grand Final with a similar level of expertise.
  4. To have all the sector winners entering the Grand Final with a good chance of taking out the title.
  5. To nurture and develop future leaders in the horticultural industry through the sector competitions.
  6. To be financially sustainable as a stand alone industry initiative with supportive sponsors committed to the competition for contractual terms of up to 3 years.
  7.  To be used to promote horticulture as a career opportunity and to lift the profile of the horticulture industry as an exciting and rewarding occupation.
  8. To create a challenging and rewarding competition for contestants to achieve outcomes beyond their expectations.

Moderation of the Competition

  1. Main judges for the 2017 competition include Jacqueline Rowarth, Chief Scientist, Environmental Protection Authority Malcolm Nitschke, General Manager, AGMARDT, and Winston Pond, Managing Consultant, Leadership Solutions Ltd.
  2. All activities are moderated by an independent moderator from Primary ITO and an Education Trust member following NZQA guidelines.
